As a mom, teacher, and former RE teacher I wanted to create a chalice that a child could safely hold. I wanted to create a chalice that a child would want to hold. I wanted to create a chalice that a child would recognize. I wanted to create a chalice that a parent or grandparent could feel good about giving to a child. I wanted to create a chalice that was functional and fun!
What better material for this chalice than LEGO® bricks? For many children, youth, and adults LEGO® bricks have a familiar feel and a positive meaning. Like our Unitarian Universalist faith, the chalice from this kit can be built, rebuilt, and reorganized over and over.
This LEGO® chalice has seven layers, like our faith has seven principles. This LEGO® chalice uses the colors of the rainbow to stand for those principles. There is a wonderful foldout available from the UUA Bookstore that many of our RE programs give to children that lists the principles in kid-friendly language. Each color from red through green to violet stands for each of the seven principles and helps children (and adults) remember the principles.
As a child, LEGO® bricks and kits were a large part of our family's life. LEGO® bricks were everywhere. As a mom, LEGO® bricks are a large part of our family's life. Even with a teenager, we still sit down at the table some weekends and build, build, build. We tell stories as we build. We invent worlds that are not yet possible. We imagine the future. This is what our Unitarian Universalist faith is all about for me, reimaging the possibilities, building the world or chalice we want to have.
